Roy started racing in 1982 following in the footsteps of his Grandmother, Uncle and Father.
The first outing on his Yamaha 250 LC was at Elvington Airfield and after that there were meetings at all his local circuits including, Aintree, Oulton Park, Darley Moor, Flookburgh and Cadwell Park.
Roys first trophy was won at Oulton Park for a third place and his first wins were at the New Brighton road meeting winning both 250cc production races.
The following year Roy concentrated on the Aintree and Darley Moor championships, finishing runner up in the Aintree championship to Mike "Spike" Edwards and winning the Darley Moor championship having some great tussles with Paul Hawksworth.
In 1984 Roy tried to forward his career by changing machines, he bought a TZ250J Yamaha that turned out to be a very poorly looked after machine.  It destroyed both barrels and a crank in two meetings.
Subsequentley the bike was sold and he bought Phil Mellors TT winning Yamaha 250 YPVS from Padgetts.  This was a bad decision, when he started to do well on it there were complaints that the bike wasn't homologated so he had to sell it, unbeknowing to him there was no logbook available so he had no choice but to trade it in at Padgetts for an RD500LC.  This was Roys favourite all time bike, the plan was to race it for a year in production and then do British Superbikes or Formula 1 as it was then.

The following year in 1985 Roy won the 500 production championship at Darley Moor.
The plan to move to superbikes the following year was thwarted when they decided to ban two strokes. The RD500was sold and a 350 YPVS Yamaha was bought.  Roy won the Darley Moor championship again but more significantly he did the Manx Grand Prix for the first time, finishing sixth in the newcomers.
The following years he tinkered with ministock racing before deciding to concentrate on road racing. Roy had reasonable results in the Manx with uncompetitive machinery until they changed the rules allowing 600s into the junior race.
Roy had a top six finish before gaining a second place in 1995 and a third in 1996.
In 1997 riding the BDC Europe 600 Suzuki he won the junior Manx Grand Prix and was leading the senior Manx Grand Prix on Martin Bullocks awesome RC30 when the clutch went.
